A scarf is a piece of fabric worn on or near the head or the neck for concealment, warmth, fashion and decoration or for religious purposes. In some countries, the manufacturing of knitting garments such as scarves still remains an important trade. Scarves have different types and uses around the world. In countries with cold climates, a thick knitted scarf, often made out of wool, is tied around the neck to keep the wearer warm. In areas with dry and dusty climates or environments where there are many airborne contaminants, a thin headscarf is worn over or wrapped around the hair to keep the hair clean. Pilots of early aircraft used silk scarves in order to keep oily smoke from the exhaust out of their mouths while flying. Scarves serves as identification in some uniforms, like in United Kingdom, academic scarves are worn with distinct combinations of stripped colours to identify their individual university and college or in scouting, members wear scarves as part of their uniform with various colors and logos to represent their scout group. Overtime, the wearing of scarves became not only a fashion accessory but a fashion statement as well.
