Andrew Jackson is the first Westerner to be elected president of the United States; he was the seventh president. He was nicknamed “Old Hickory” for his toughness. He concentrated on developing the state of Tennessee and was the only president who was primarily associated with the frontier. His election marked the end of a political era that was dominated by the planter aristocracy of Virginia and New England’s commercial aristocracy.
Jackson was the youngest among the three siblings of Andrew and Elizabeth Jackson who were Scots-Irish immigrants. Before elected president, he served as a military governor of Florida, commander of the American forces of the Battle of New Orleans and eponym of the era of Jacksonian democracy.
