LASER

LASER.jpgLaser is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. It is a device that emits light, electromagnetic radiation, through a process called stimulated emission. The laser light is very pure in color, can be extremely intense and can be directed with great accuracy. It is used in many modern technological devices including CD players, laser printers and bar code readers. In manufacturing lasers are used for cutting, bending and welding metal and other materials and for marking. It is also used by the military for target designation, range-finding and illumination. In the field of medicine, lasers are also greatly used for surgery, diagnostics and therapeutic applications.

Andrew Jackson

Andrew Jackson is the first Westerner to be elected president of the United States; he was the seventh president. He was nicknamed “Old Hickory” for his toughness. He concentrated on developing the state of Tennessee and was the only president who was primarily associated with the frontier. His election marked the end of a political era that was dominated by the planter aristocracy of Virginia and New England’s commercial aristocracy.

Jackson was the youngest among the three siblings of Andrew and Elizabeth Jackson who were Scots-Irish immigrants. Before elected president, he served as a military governor of Florida, commander of the American forces of the Battle of New Orleans and eponym of the era of Jacksonian democracy.

Jakarta

JakartaIndonesia.jpgJakarta formerly named Batavia is the capital and the largest city of Republic of Indonesia. It is located on the northwest coast of Java Island at the mouth of the Liwung River. Jakarta was called by the Dutch Batavia which served as the capital of the Netherlands Indies for most of the 17th through early 20th centuries. The city is the center of Indonesia’s administrative, economic and cultural activities; it also serves as a major transportation and commercial hub within Asia. Jakarta’s climate is hot and humid all year round and heavy rainfall is felt from November to May.

When visiting Jakarta, points of interests would be it’s notable landmarks which includes the former Dutch city hall that now houses the Jakarta History Museum; Istana Merdeka, the presidential palace and Istiqlal Mosque.

Denmark

denmark.jpgIt’s official name in Danish is Kongeriget Danmark but commonly known as Denmark, is a nation in the Scandinavian region of northwestern Europe. Denmark is the southernmost of the Nordic countries. The nation is a constitutional monarchy that follows a parliamentary system of government. A member of the European Union and is the founding member of NATO.

The nation observes a highly free market, has a capitalist economy and was ranked as the “happiest place in the world” based on standards of welfare, health and education. Denmark is a wealthy and modernized country where it’s citizens enjoy a very high standard living. It’s capital city is Copenhagen and it’s national language is Danish. Well known fairytale writer Hans Christian Anderson and religious philosopher Søren Kierkegaard are from Denmark.

Oberon

Oberon is Uranus’ large moon. It orbits the planet at a distance of about 583,000 km, making it Uranus’ most distant known satellite. It takes 13.5 Earth days for the moon to completely orbit the planet. Oberon’s orbit is circular and is parallel to Uranus’ equator. It measures about 1520 km across or about half the diameter of Earth’s moon and is spherical.

Oberon has a surface that is heavy cratered with many large craters indicating the moon’s great age. The moon’s top layer surface is dark but asteroids that hit the moon sometimes punch through to a bright ice layer below. Oberon was discovered in by British astronomer Sir William Herschel in 1787 was was named after a character in William Shakespeare’s play A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Birka

Birka.jpgBirka was an important trading center on the island of Björkö in Sweden during the Viking Age, which handled goods from Scandinavia as well as Central and Eastern Europe and the Orient. It was established during the 8th century and became an important international port for visitors from different places. It’s name was said to be derived from an old Norse word “birk” which means a market place. Birka, together with Hovgården has been considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993 and has been regarded as Sweden’s oldest town. Today. Birka and Hovgården are owned by the Swedish government and managed by the Swedish National Heritage Board.

Lion

lions.jpgThe lion is the largest member of the cat family and is the second largest living cat after the tiger. They are also known for their loud, mighty roar that maybe be heard by humans more than 8 km away. Lions are usually found in most of Africa, much in Eurasia and in the Americas. In recent times, lions are found wide only in Africa south of the Sahara Desert and a reserve called the Gir National Park and Lion Sanctuary in northwest India. Most lions prey on ungulates and in general do not hunt for humans however some have been known to become man-eaters and seek human prey.

Male lions weigh between 150 to 250 kg while female lions are smaller, weighing between 120 to 182 kg. They have massive shoulders and strong forelimbs, long, sharp claws and short, powerful jaws. Adult lions have furs that varies from light tan to reddish brown and only male lions grow a mane around the shoulders.

Chicken Soup for the Soul

Chicken Soup for the Soul is a series of books that usually features a collection of short and inspirational stories and motivational essays. The stories and essays were complied by motivational speakers Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen. The first book sold over 2 million copies and now over 100 million copies are in print and have been translated in 54 languages world wide. The name “Chicken Soup” was chosen by the authors of the book because of the use of chicken soup as a home remedy for the sick. After the success of Chicken Soup for the Soul, over 105 titles have been published; many of which are directed to specific groups of people. The Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul series also became a bestseller among teens across the world.

B-17

B17.jpgThe Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress is a four-engine heavy bomber aircraft that was developed for the United States Army Air Corps. It was world war II’s most famous heavy bomber plane that first flew on July 28, 1935. It’s nickname “Flying Fortress”was given by the members of the press who were present during the aircraft’s first take off because of it’s heavy defensive armament.The aircraft had five machine guns, room for 4,800 pounds of bombs, had electrically retractable landing gear and could accommodate a crew of nine. The B-17 Flying Fortress has become an icon of American power for many reasons and a symbol of its Air Force and has achieved a lasting fame in the general public.

Västerås

Vasteras.jpgVästerås is a city in central Sweden, located on the mouth of Lake Mälaren in the province Västmanland. The city is the capital of Västmanland County and a road and railroad hub; it is also the center of the Swedish electrical industry and manufactures appliances, iron and steel, generators, motors, glass, locomotives and lumber products. Västerås is one of Sweden’s and Northern Europe’s oldest cities.

Tourists are attracted to some of the Västerås historical sites such as the Rudbeckianska Gymnasiet, the oldest gymnasium in Sweden. The Gothic cathedral built in 1271 which houses the tomb of Eric XIV, king of Sweden and the Djakneberget, a park containing statues of historical personages.
